The bottom line for me is to know whether I should retire the D60.

I don't want to because it is very light and small, particularly when married with a good lens, which the 35mm f1.8 AF-S lens is. That makes it an excellent carry everywhere camera.

I think what I showed is that provided one recognizes the dynamic range limitations of the D60 and don't use it for scenes that depend on gentle subtlety of color, then it is an excellent camera.

The D5000 is probably better - and the D90 better again. The video capability on these two cameras is enticing.

Do you shoot video on your D90?

I chose the white background because it is unforgiving, and shows any shadows most harshly.

Hmm..I see it...more contrast or abruptness as you put it, in the D60 shot. But ever so slight. The fact that the two crops themselves are different is probably distracting me a bit.
Did you choose the white backdrop for a reason?

I think it can be seen in these shots. Dynamic range is like bookends squeezing an image from the shadows and the highlights.

I think the D60 image looks more squeezed - the transition from dark to light is more abrupt. The range from dark to light in the shot from the D700 looks more open. That's how I see it.

What do you think?

That's next on the list of things to do - look out for it.
